Jazz is an original pastel painting. It is the first in a series based on images I composed using a viewfinder from a large photograph of a Hawthorn tree ripe with berries. My intention going into abstracts was to step more confidently into the unknown. I wanted to free myself from representational art and focus more on form, line, value, and color. I also wanted the painting itself to have more say in where it wanted to go. I was recently inspired by an interview with the master pastelist Bill Creevy. He talked about how he preferred to start with a bad, somewhat out of focus, photograph than a good one. He said it freed him up to imagine and interpret more of what he couldn't see than match in a more photo-realist way that which he did see. I've taken those words of wisdom to heart in my adventures with abstracts!
Jazz measures 9.5" x 9.5" and is sold unframed. Please contact me if you would like to purchase the painting framed.
